18 Density PU Foam
1. Packaging & Protection

This is perhaps the most common use. Because it’s soft and flexible, it excels at cushioning items without adding significant weight to the shipping box.

 

• Electronics: Lining for boxes to prevent scratches and minor impacts.

• Glassware: Custom inserts for fragile items.

   

•  Case Inserts: Often used in the lids of equipment cases (the "egg crate" foam style).

   

2. Low-Cost Furniture Components

In the furniture industry, 18 density is used where comfort is needed but high support isn't required.

• Back Cushions: Used in sofa backs where you lean against it, but don’t sit on it.

• Headboards: Providing a soft touch for upholstered bed frames.

•  Armrests: Padding the hard wooden or metal frames of chairs.

   

3. Bedding Accessories

You won’t find a high-quality mattress made entirely of 18 density foam (it would bottom out immediately), but it’s great for:

• Budget Pillows: Often shredded or used as a soft core.

• Mattress Toppers: Provides a very soft, "cloud-like" initial feel on top of a firmer base.

• Quilting: Stitched into the top fabric layer of mattresses for that plush, quilt

  • ✔ Okay for guest beds or light-weight individuals

  • ❌ Not recommended for daily adult use (may lose shape quickly)

  For long-lasting furniture or mattresses, densities like 28–40 kg/m³ are usually better.

These are polyether based Polyurethane foam made with extra softness for specific comfort applications. Soft foams are available in low to medium density range (15-30 kg/m3). soft foams are used for all quilting needs, mattress overlay, top lining in sofas, pillows etc. Fabric laminated soft foam is used in car seat and interior components of automobiles such as roof liners, dashboards etc; upholstered soft surface such as upholstered headboards, upholstered soft surface such as upholstered headboards, upholstered wall etc; mattress padding; shoes; office bags; baby carrier bags; jackets and leisure apeal; hiking clothes; hats; helmets; glover; toy etc.

In preferred embodiments, the fire-resistant polyurethane foam is capable of withstanding flame temperature of about 1000° C. for more than 1 hour without losing its structural integrity; effectively preventing direct heat transfer to the interior.

1. Energy & Utilities (District Heating)

One of the most critical industrial uses is in pre-insulated pipe systems.

• The Setup: A steel inner pipe is wrapped in hard PU foam and encased in a plastic outer jacket.

• The Goal: This is used for "District Heating," where hot water is pumped across entire cities. The hard foam is so efficient that heat loss is kept under 2% to 5% over many miles.

2. Automotive & E-Mobility (Electric Vehicles)

As of 2026, the push for lighter EVs has made rigid foam a "stealth" hero in car manufacturing.

• NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness): Hard foam is injected into the pillars and chassis cavities of cars. It hardens to provide structural stiffness while blocking road noise.

• Battery Enclosures: It is used to create fire-resistant, thermally stable housings for EV battery packs, protecting cells from extreme weather and physical impact.

3. Aerospace & Marine Engineering

Hard foam is often used as a "core material" in sandwich construction.

• Aviation: It is sandwiched between layers of carbon fiber for floor panels, overhead bins, and wing flaps to keep weight at an absolute minimum.

• Sub-Sea Insulation: In offshore oil and gas, specialized "Syntactic" hard foams are used to insulate equipment sitting thousands of feet underwater, where the pressure would crush normal foam.

4. Tooling & Prototyping (The "Digital" Wood)

In heavy manufacturing, high-density rigid foam (often called Tooling Board) is used instead of wood or metal for modeling.

• CNC Machining: Industrial designers machine car body prototypes or wind turbine blade molds out of massive blocks of hard foam.

• Why? It doesn't expand or contract with humidity, it’s dimensionally stable, and it’s much cheaper and faster to mill than aluminum.

5. Cold Chain Logistics (Pharmaceuticals & Food)

With the global increase in biological medicines and high-end food exports:

• ISO Containers: The walls of refrigerated shipping containers are packed with high-pressure hard foam to ensure "zero-fail" temperature environments.

• Cryogenic Storage: Used in the insulation of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) tankers, where temperatures must stay at -162°C.
